Whether you’re a CEO looking for your next move or a first jobber considering your career options it is important to gain clarity of thought and what’s important to you.

Here are 8 questions to ask yourself.

1.Why are you considering leaving your current organisation?

Is it a particular frustration with your current employer or the role you’re doing? Is it a cultural or leadership issue, financial, something else or your career ambition?

Often individuals start to explore opportunities outside their current organisation without thoroughly exploring career options where they are. Have that discussion with your line manager, or depending on the size of the business, the MD/Owner.

You don’t need to threaten to quit but have an open honest discussion about your career ambitions or particular frustrations and see if together you can produce a solution and a plan moving forward. Often minor frustrations can be sorted out and a solution reached!

If you have had the discussion and there is no foreseeable options or solutions internally then it may be the best option to start considering a new role externally.

It’s always good to seek confidential advice or counsel at this stage to help gain clarity on why you’re looking and what you are looking to do (an experienced and trusted recruiter or a respected business person can be very helpful).

Moving companies can be stressful and depending how long you have been with a company, emotionally it can be an upheaval. It’s a balance between getting support and the question of what if? Sometimes a fear of change holds people back from making a career move and they end up settling for the status quo.
