I’m ashamed to admit it, but these days I am a fair-weather cyclist. But with the sun on my skin last week, I finally abandoned the turbo trainer and was back out on the open road. The lighter nights don’t do any harm either. That soothing warmth between the isobars has stirred up my enthusiasm for the season ahead.
Sadly, RideLondon—the crown jewel of my cycling calendar—has been postponed until further notice in 2025. But instead of wallowing, I’ve been on the hunt for new goals. Thankfully, the UK offers a rich calendar of sportives that are just as scenic, challenging, and soul-stirring.
While some of the most iconic events have already sold out, there’s still time to snag a place in some brilliant alternatives. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just getting started, here are some of the top rides to pencil into your calendar for 2025.
🚴♂️ Why Ride a Sportive?
You might ask, “Why pay to ride on roads that are normally free?” Fair question.
The solution? It’s all about the experience—from traffic-coned or closed roads to fully stocked feed stations and lively event villages. Mix in the fellowship of hundreds of similarly-inclined riders, and it’s more than riding—it’s a day to remember.
Oh, and then there are the medals, the encouragement, and the post-ride swagger. If you need an excuse to rein in the pints and get back in the saddle, a sportive could be just what you need. 🏅
