Understanding Lock Terminology | TattooInsure

To provide insurance against damage to materials, we need to be sure that your premises meet certain standards of security. More specifically, we need:

All external doors and any internal doors which lead to other premises (except fire exits) to be locked with mortice deadlocks and box striking plates to British Standard 3621.

We are aware that lock jargon is complicated. This manual explains the most critical jargon so you are aware of the type of locks which are installed on your property.

🔑 Key Lock Jargon Explained

Five-Lever

  • Refers to the amount of levers in the lock.
  • More levers = more key combinations, making it stronger.
  • Five-lever locks are harder to pick and provide stronger security.

Mortice Lock

  • Installed inside a slot cut in the body of the door.
  • Sits inside the door rather than on the surface.
  • Offers a stronger degree of security than surface-mounted locks.

Rimlock

  • Fitted to the door surface, like an old-style “Yale” lock.
  • Easier to install but generally less secure than mortice locks.

Deadlock

  • Requires a key to lock and unlock from inside or outside.
  • Increases security by making it more difficult to enter without a key.

🔒 Why the Right Lock Matters

Fitting the correct lock is not simply a matter of meeting insurance requirements—it’s protecting your property properly. An incorrect or wrong lock could:

  • Make your insurance policy ineffective in the event of a claim.
  • Leave your property more at risk of burglary by making it easier to gain entry.

Most Common Methods of Burglary Prevented by Correct Locks:

  • Forcing the lock – Older latch locks are typically simple to bypass with a common object like a credit card.
  • Breaking a window and reaching in – A deadlock prevents intruders from simply turning a latch.
  • Exiting by the door – Burglars may enter via an open window but like to leave by a door. A deadlock prevents this unless they find the key as well.
